How to duplicate a page in a PDF

Needing a second copy of a page is more common than it sounds: the same signature sheet at the end of several counterparts, the same blank form twice in a pack, the same cover before each section, a separator page repeated through a scan.

A copy, not a re-creation

The right way to duplicate a page in a PDF is to copy it structurally: the page object, its content stream and the resources it uses — fonts, images, colour spaces — are added to the document as a new page. The copy has the same dimensions, the same orientation and the same quality as the original, because it is the same content.

The wrong way is to copy the page as a picture of itself. Then the duplicate is an image: the words in it can no longer be searched or selected, and it blurs when you zoom in. If a “duplicate” ever costs you your text, the tool did the wrong thing.

The copy is independent

Once duplicated, the two pages are separate objects. Rotating one does not rotate the other. Deleting one does not delete the other. Moving one leaves the other where it was.

That is worth being precise about: you do not get “the same page twice”, you get two pages that happen to be identical right now. Everything you can do to a page, you can do to either of them alone.

What it costs in file size

Duplicating a page grows the file by roughly the weight of that page’s content — but only once per copy, and less than you would guess. PDF writers share common resources, so if the duplicate uses the same fonts and images as the original, only the page itself is really new. A text-heavy page usually costs a few kilobytes. A full-page scan costs about as much as the scan.

Doing it in Organize PDF

  1. Open the PDF.
  2. Select the page or pages to duplicate.
  3. Duplicate — the copies appear directly after the selection, as one block, and the new copies stay selected.
  4. Move them if they belong elsewhere, then Save PDF.

Because the copies stay selected, the next action usually works without re-selecting anything: see how to reorder PDF pages for moving a block, or editing pages in bulk for working on many at once.
