How to rotate PDF pages
A page lying on its side almost always comes from scanning: the sheet was fed landscape, or a phone photo was taken at an angle the software took literally. Turning your head is not a fix. Turning the page is.
Rotation is a property of the page
Every PDF page carries a value called /Rotate, and it takes exactly four values: 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. A viewer reads it and draws the page accordingly.
The consequence is worth stating plainly: rotating a page does not redraw its contents. The text, the drawings and the images stay exactly where they are inside the page; what changes is which way up the page is displayed. So the file does not grow, and nothing loses quality — unlike rotating an image, which really does resample pixels.
Because there are only four values, rotation is always a quarter turn. There is no “straighten this by 3 degrees” in the page property; that would be a different job, done to the content rather than to the page.
Rotating the view is not rotating the document
Most PDF readers have a rotate button in their toolbar. It turns the current view and nothing else — close the file, open it again, and the page is back on its side.
For the change to last, the rotation has to be written into the document and the file saved again. That is the difference between a viewer setting and an edit.
When some pages are wrong and others are fine
A mixed scan often has a few pages at 90° and a few at 270°. Correcting them one by one is tedious; selecting the ones that face the same way and turning them together is one action. See editing pages in bulk for how selection works.
Rotation is always applied relative to the page’s current orientation. A page already at 90° that you turn right once more ends up at 180°. Two right turns and two left turns cancel out.
Doing it in Organize PDF
- Open the PDF.
- Select the pages that need correcting — one, several, or all of them.
- Rotate left or Rotate right.
- Save PDF.
If you turned the wrong way, undo is one step: five pages rotated together came from one action, so one undo brings all five back. Pages that are also out of order can be moved in the same session — see how to reorder PDF pages.
